How to persuade

- How important is persuasion in negotiation?

- You know I learned a long time ago that I cannot persuade anyone to do anything. I can’t convince them. I can’t persuade them. I mean we all know that seat belts save lives but by golly some youngster dies in my neighborhood every couple years because they weren’t wearing a seatbelt in a simple auto accident that should have not been a problem. So I don’t even try to convince or persuade. It’s not even in my vocabulary of my coaching. What is in my vocabulary is helping discovery. Helping discovery and giving people permission to reject what they are seeing. It’s okay if you don’t want to do this. It’s okay if you don’t want to fasten your seatbelts. Just tell me no you don’t want to fasten them. It’s okay. I just can’t start the car until you do. So we can’t travel, so we can’t go to the event. It’s okay, we don’t have to go!
