Боно писал песню «City Of Blinding Lights» семь лет. Начал работать над ней во времена альбома «Pop» (1997), с тех пор песня перетерпела множество изменений, и вошла в альбом «How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb» 2004 года. Припев песни «Oh, you look so beautiful tonight / In the city of blinding lights» — отсылка к выступлению U2 на мемориальном концерте после трагедии 11 сентября. Когда зал осветил свет, Боно увидел слезы на глазах у публики. «Oh, you look so beautiful tonight», — крикнул им вокалист. А на фоне мерцали огни Нью-Йорка…
