The Pearl

He was so very old 
and I am yet not far behind. 
We are but here a season, 
each just a fleeting wisp of life. 

And I think about my wife, 
of growing old with her 
and knowing one of us will die 
and one will be alone. 

I’ve seen it with my grandparents. 
It’s a pain I fear so strong. 
It’s a terrible thing to die too old,
