Everything Is Going According To Plan

Only your first tattoo has to mean something 
Then you can get something dumb to fill the rest in 
It’s only skin. 
I was up all night, the tinnitus of anxiety rings shrilly. 
Phone cord coiled around my finger 
And who has a phone cord anymore? 
That’s how I knew it was a dream. 

There are some turns of phrase I just viscerally hate 
Like: tears don’t roll down faces 
They slide like slugs, ugly, 
Flood the shallows 
Leaving a wasteland in their wake. 

Everything is going according to plan
