Messiaen has written ‘Pic vert / Pic épeiche’ in his score. This caused some [bad word] because the score did not, at first, offer any clear view of what sound or mixture of sounds Messiaen had actually used. For instance, the cry or ‘laugh’ of a green woodpecker is very different from the short call of the great spotted wood [bad word]  Both of these species can produce a [bad word] sound but that of the great spotted woodpecker is shorter than that of the green woodpecker. The great spotted also [bad word] more frequently than the green. Further study of the score
