She attended a local Assembly of God school for Jr High and high school in Dearborn Heights. She began playing her own music in the Detroit area and collaborated with fellow singer-songwriter Dawn Xiana Moon and Son of Adam. After meeting Billy McLaughlin, she moved to Minneapolis, and in 2003 she signed with major label EMI. She was often compared to Norah Jones.
